Short Introduction

5eTools is an open-source website (Licensed under the MIT license) which is designed to be able to be used by anyone who wishes to curate the content of their D&D 5e books in a simplified digital manner, (online or on their local computers or ... if you're a bit of coder ... customized on their own private or public websites for their and their player's use.)

The site is developed to help provide an easier means to search and work with the resources users already own IRL (in real life). Allowing a player or DM to carry all their books and supplements on their laptop even if they do not have internet access wherever they are.

If you are developer, please see this page if you wish to contribute time to a project.

Where to start...

You're likely here because you've found the site, and want to do "x" with it and want to know how to do it. or you tried to do "x" with and its not working.

So, for that let's directly link to where you likely want to go...

History

The site arose from the primordial pit that is 4chan, and then was nearly lost were it not for Astranauta, who kept a copy of what had been gathered together and then the current lead dev Giddy took over, along with help from DBAWiseMan, 5egmegaanon, aeosynth, grxanon, Temp345, Azzurite, Buluphont and several others ... with the support of Lord Dusk.

Code

There remains to means to get the code; the public Github (which is *not* the most updated code -- it is, however, a place for persons to fork the code, report bugs (though .. you should use the Troubleshooting BEFORE attempting to do such) or a location to make pull requests with fixes or additions you've made.

The current source code is available as a zipped archive on the distribution page.
  • Basic (runs, but requires internet access for various elements)
  • Developer (runs, including offline)
  • Support Files (images. which you'll need if you're attempting to run the site offline)
(all of which is covered in the installation guide.)
As previously mentioned the site and its code are opensource and released under the MIT license. Which (paraphrased) means you are welcome to use it, modify it, distribute it, and build from it.
It is however requested that if you do develop new versions or features that you fork from the Github and that you modify this page with a link to your own project.

Tracked Variants:
  • For Shadowrun
  • For Call of Cthulhu
  • For Pathfinder

Content

The site draws upon a number of resources, and by default, all RAW (Rules as Written / Offical) content is loaded when the site loads.
We should address that now.
The site CAN be used improperly. The content is there, and if you don't own a copy of the content - you should use the Blacklist to limit the content that you own or have legitimate access to. A link to where you can obtain legal copies of each resource has been provided so that you can better support both WoTC and the individual content developers.
Content

The site provides all RAW content (Officially released content) which currently means it contains the following:

Rolls (Damage/Saves/Skills/Tables)
When you come across a roll that has been linked in the content, you can click upon the link and it will open the Dice Roller and generate a result within the roller's window.

Links
TagPopupVid.gif
The content uses various tags such as {@spell Detect Magic} which will be denoted by blue text, that when moused over will prompt a pop-up window of the content to grant temporary access. As mentioned above, this is a place where the Shift key.png shift key can help. Holding Shift while your cursor is over a popup link will freeze it and add additional controls to the window.

From left to right (PopupWindowControls.png)

  • Go to Page - this immediately takes the user to the page within the source being cited .
  • Open a pop-up - open a new browser window for the pop-up's content.
  • Close - Close the pop-up window and return to the current page.

Page Layout

The website's content is mostly shown in a pretty consistent format, depending upon the topic/subject. Below are the options with which you can familiarize yourself with those, the common layout and the features around such.

Website Navbar
Website toolbar.PNG

The Navbar appears at the top of most of the pages on the site and helps quickly navigate between its features, and will help (at a glance) identify what page you are on, and even give some specific advice for its use, and a link to the wiki for the site's feature(s).

For more infomration see the information about the Website Navbar

Omnisearch.PNG
OmniSearch
Virtually every page (the DM Screen being the obvious exclusion) will have the omnisearch box. Denoted by box on the right side of the navbar, with the words "Search everywhere..."
The Omnisearch box searches the dataset's titles for matching content. It does not search the description (ie `Fluff`) text, but rather focuses upon key data fields in Monster, Items, Tables, Rules, Feats, etc. fields like title, name.

For more information see the Omnisearch Feature page.

Dice Utility
At the bottom of most pages, there will be this icon RollerButton.png. When it is clicked (as the animation shows) it will open a small window which can be used to either roll or return the results of actions triggered by clicking other elements of the site. (usually triggered by a link on the page that most often look like 2d10 this. (There are some instructions on how to do this within the JSON data in the Renderer Demo should you want to enable this for your own documents - see Homebrew.

The roller uses the common format for dice rolling (that being <a>d<X> where <a> is the number of dice rolled <X> number of times. The results of the roll(s) is(are) presented to the roller window with separate entries and then the sum of the rolls are calculated as well.

For a detailed description of the feature please see the 🎲 Dice Roller page.

Reference Pages

Reference pages are for content with dense data; things like Items; Tables; Monsters/Beastiary; Feats; Spells; etc. Things that having a filter for content is most helpful with.

The following image is a color-coded representation of a fairly common layout of the site's information. The various highlighted regions are covered in brief below.
