- This feature allows you to use external links to graphics for your tokens and map assets. This allows you to use graphics without using your disk quota.
Instructions(What it does)
- Right mouse click on the canvas desktop (but not on an existing token/map/map asset)
- The menu shown on the right side of the page should open if you've clicked correctly.
- Click upon Create Token from URL
- The popup window will open requesting a URL for an image.
- Paste (
CTRL + V
) or type in the Image's URL - Choose Ok, and then you SHOULD see the image show shortly thereafter.
- see the support section below for common solutions for Images that don't show up.

- Looks like its perfect... (Did we miss anything?)
Where can I go for/How do I find images
- You are looking for specific images. In general I'd suggest three sites:
- Pinterest (search in google for
site:pinterest.com <replace this with topic>
- Deviant Art (search in google for
site:deviantart.com <replace this with topic>
- Art Repo

My URL didn't make a token!! What happened?!
- If, after you've place the URL at the prompt, if get an error or get nothing please confirm your link is a direct file link, and that the link is for an image file, not a zip, or PDF and if the image is an animation - please read th following
My URLs for Animated Token(s) don't work
- Using links to animations doesn't produce a token, or at best doesn't produce a usable token.
- Work Around:animated tokens need special handling: if we want to use
example.com/folder/mywebm.webm
for an animated token, roll20 will useexample.com/folder/med.webm
for the actual animation andexample.com/folder/sample.png
for the thumbnail (non animated image).
- In other words when you are seeking to use an animated token; there must be, in the same folder a non-animated
.PNG
file of the same name.
My Token disappeared
- A token a had disappeared or had a "broken" symbol now
- REASON:The image you've chosen to link to may have been deleted, or the site it is upon may be down (either temporarily or forever). You may need to ensure your images are hosting on a site you have control of and/or keep a backup of images you use. (Feel free to request they be added to the Art Repo
- To date: Gyazo; Imgur have both broken and users have lost their images randomly. Its advised to avoid them for hosting images. SHOULD that happen and you experience catastrophic failure/loss - use the Module Importer/Exporter to get a copy of the game's data and then within that file (see homebrew) search out and replace the URLs of the missing images with updated/functional URLS.
- I would suggest making a list of the images you want to use, and use either the External Art tool (as it adds the art item into your Art Library
). I would suggest using the Art Repo, and visiting their feature page for details on how to use it.
