CR Scaling

A feature developed first by Giddy, and is being actively developed by D&D Beyond.
The CR Scaling lets you effectively nudge the threat level of a creature up or down in its CR value to customize your encounters.

Remember: Encounter CR ratings are based off several assumptions; stats that progress from a Matrix like development; CORE / RAW Races, Classes and limited Magical Items.

Instructions (How to use it)

Click upon CRScaling.png Scaling Icon. A Slider UI element will open and you may move the slider to increase or decrease its threat rating.
Click up Refresh icon to restore the creature to its normal Attack and Defense.

Modifications are based off the DMG's guidances of ratio of Defense; Offense; and relative values of Traits. (See Known Issues below)

Known Issues/Limitations

Limitation

The DMG's guidance for how a CR rating works, has some pretty broad/vague rules for defense and offensive abilities.
Work Around:
As a result, it is best to not modify the CR of a creature by +/-4 steps in the CR. If you do, you might wind up with a creature with a single attack that deals 320+ damage and a AC of 24+. To make it more functional, you should manually review and adjust the creature by adding additional attacks or traits.

FAQ

Crazy Attacks!?!

The DMG's guidance for how a CR rating works, has some pretty broad/vague rules for defense and offensive abilities. When you put them into practice, they work - sorta - but as the CR scales upward the more obvious the problem is with the DMG's formula.
Work Around:
Try to not modify the CR of a creature by +/-4 steps in the CR. If you do, you might wind up with a creature with a single attack that deals 320+ damage and a AC of 24+. To make it more functional, you should manually review and adjust the creature by adding additional attacks or traits.
